Notice to Navigation – Data Collection at Marmet Locks

    Here’s another Notice to Navigation – the Marmet Locks will be closed for several hours at a time Aug. 24 through 26 to allow for some research data collection.

   Here are the details:

   Notice is given that beginning on Aug. 24, 2010, and continuing until Aug. 26, 2010, Marmet Locks and Dam will be closed for research data collection. The closure will be from 8:00 a.m. to noon and 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily.

Notice to Navigation – Work Coming Up On The Kanawha River

   Here’s a notice to Navigation about work coming up along the Kanawha River:

   Notice is given that on or about Aug. 10, 2010, Amherst Madison will commence emergency bank stabilization activities at the E.I. DU PONT facility along the right descending bank of the Kanawha River, mile 68.8.

   The contractor’s floating plant will consist of the M/V LADY LOIS, one barge mounted crane, and one material barge. The M/V LADY LOIS will be monitoring marine channels 13 and 16. The work will be performed Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is expected to be completed on or about 23 August 2010.

   During non-working hours the contractor’s floating plant will be moored at the work site and lighted according to regulations.

   Mariners are urged to exercise caution when transiting this area.

Corps Awards Two $15 Million Contracts

   The Huntington District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently awarded two $15 million Indefinite Delivery Contracts on August 3, 2010, to TAB Construction and Prus Contracting, both Ohio companies.

   The contracts will be used for small construction work throughout the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division.

   The Huntington District is one of seven Districts that make up the Division – the others are the Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Louisville, Nashville and Pittsburgh Districts.

“Safety on the Blue” at Bluestone Lake

   It was a beautiful weekend to visit Bluestone Lake and take part in the annual “Safety on the Blue” event.

   Several agencies join forces to teach water safety to visitors to Bluestone Lake, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Coast Guard and the Red Cross.

   This was the sixth year for the event, which featured boat inspections, safety demonstrations, games, food and boat rides.

   Almost 300 people took part in the event held from noon to 4 p.m. at the Bluestone Bridge Parking Lot (Pit Area) near the launch ramp.

   The event also included popular characters such as SpongeBob and Cory the Water Safety Boat.

   ”Safety on the Blue” was presented by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the “Safety on the Blue” Committee and the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
